Chandler Polar Ice....

Today was the first day of lessons at Chandler Polar Ice. The whole goal was to learn the proper way to get back up when you fall.... which happened quite often. There was only one other little boy in the class, and both he and Jazzy were on their rear ends more than their feet. Jasmine *did* learn to "march" a little, which was the next step. The skating rink advertises that they have shoes to fit toddlers, but the smallest sized skates still had over an inch at the end of the toes, which didn't help Jazzy's coordination too much. It is a humongous place with two big ice skating rinks, figure skating and hockey for age 2- adult, karate classes, a restaurant and other shops.

Later we went to Cyclo Vietnamese restaurant where we had seafood Pho and spring rolls. We saw Laurie, Sandy, Ivy, and Olivia Wyatt, along with Laurie's mother. They had just returned recently from a trip back to Vietnam to visit their orphanages and tour the country.

After lunch we went to Lee Lee's Asian market, an extremely large grocery store with various aisles for each country... i.e. Korea, Vietnam, China, Caribbean, etc. Jasmine bought some yummy Vietnamese coconut cookies with her own money. She earns "commissions" each time she does a chore in the house, picks up her toys, or uses the potty properly. I usually don't like most of the things at the Asian store i.e. whole ducks or chickens with their eyeballs popping out, frogs eggs, etc, but those coconut toffee cookies are scrumptious.

Judy, About what size skates do you think Jasmine should be wearing? I think our smallest pair would be too big because we rented for a while when the kids started skating lessons... I need to dig through the closet and find them to see.

Hi
I had to find out who you are:). The smallest size they had at the rink was Size 6....which was very big.... But she usually wears a size 5 or 5 1/2 shoe.... Thanks for the offer.

OK, ours are WAY bigger than that! Wow... So over the years that my girls skated, I learned the best skate adjustment trick from the owner of the custom skate shop in Tempe. He recommended adding or replacing the skate inserts. You could take a piece of paper with you to her next lesson and pull out the skate insert to trace it. Then, buy inserts (I bought some at Walgreens) and cut them to fit the rental skates. You'd have the one extra step of adding your insert to the existing one in the rental before putting the skates on her at lesson time. The catch will be figuring out where to get inserts in that small size. I replaced Ivy skate inserts with some dress shoe inserts that were thinner to help her wear a pairof skates longer and added a thick sole insert to the exiwsting one in Olivia's skates when they were too large (hand-me-downs from Ivy's wide feet). It seems that I cut the thickest pair of Scholls inserts that I found at Walgreens, but I can't remember if it was a youth size. I pulled it out and it says 'Profoot.' Also, it is under the existing insert that came with the skates, but I'm not sure if that's what was recommended to me or if that's what worked best with these particular inserts... Sounds like fun! When they're first starting, I think it really makes sense to use the rentals. At some point when the actual blade makes a difference, it's nice to have at least a basic pair of figure skates so you can keep the blades consistently sharp. Of course, they will be happy to offer you all of that advice at lessons! Talk about A LOT of unsolicited advice. ;)
